I made a mesmer as my first character in prophecies and i SUCKED as a mesmer untill about Henge of Denravi. Then i started to figure them out. I found that Domination magic was good for my style of playing, killing ppl while stopping them from doing wat i wanted. so i went with a interrupt build and beat eles and necros and monks into the ground. and then, factions came out... i personally HATE the new mesmer domination skills for factions, plus i never got to merge my accounts and cant use my prophecies skills. Then, i accidentally deleted my mesmer who had droks armor and everything. (thought i was deleting another one) and once i realized my mistake, i started in on an illusion build. im currently working on him now. hes a Me/W and so far hes doing really well. the thing i like most about illusion is the degen and slowing ppl down. but really, i dont think illusion is right for me, so i think i might go back to domination, i ahvent decided. hmm... but yeah, mesmers rock all around and i hope u like making one.

rofl, so true, never realised that advantage.
You'll rarely get complimentsas mesmer, because most people don't understand what you do anyway. Being a free agent without role expectations suits me fine, though. Shut down a healer or make the distant casters kill themselves? Soften the warrior's targets? Rescue the monk from being zerged?
I use /N or /Mo. /Mo has multiple Res and unconditional healing, but I agree that usually /N is stronger.
On the other hand, if you are masochist, them monk is for you. Love to hear the Kamikaze warrior swear at the noob healer? See the group run off to 3 different directions? Fending off 3 enemies on your own while reading "where's the f***ing healing???". Or "Rez me!" with the fight still raging? Go monk!
Aditional monk bonus (see above) is a lot of blind invites, with the "start mission"-timer ticking as soon as you accept

I just started a mesmer char the other day ( I love all casters and mesmer was the only one I haven't tried ). I have to say I love her. Good looks, amazing skills and armour to die for.
I went to Tyria instead of Cantha though, reason:
I miss Tyria
I can get skills via quests (as opposed to buying them all in Cantha which annoys me :S ).
I hope you're having as much fun playing a mesmer as I am
